Lessons

Nahwu (Arabic syntax) orders the position of a word within a sentence, while shorof (Arabic morphology) shapes the forms a word takes from a single root. The Arabi Method guides you through six sequential levels, from knowing isim (noun), fi'il (verb), and harf (particle) to performing the i'rab (case parsing) of a whole sentence. Private one on one, guided by a competent Arabic teacher, present in your home or online.

What It Is

What is Nahwu and Shorof?

Nahwu is the science that orders the position of a word within a sentence and decides the i'rab (case ending) marker at its end. Shorof is the science that shapes how a word changes form from a single root through wazan (morphological patterns).

Knowing the three kinds of word, namely isim (noun), fi'il (verb), and harf (particle), as the first door into nahwu.
Understanding i'rab, the change at the end of a word into rafa', nashab, jar, or jazm according to its position.
Practicing tashrif, changing a single root word following wazan (patterns) in shorof.
Distinguishing jumlah ismiyah (nominal sentence) and jumlah fi'liyah (verbal sentence) as the two basic structures of an Arabic sentence.
Method

The Steps of the Arabi Method in Nahwu and Shorof

Arabic grammar is built in stages, from a rule that is understood to one that is applied to real sentences, then practiced until it sticks.

  1. Introducing the Rule

Each meeting opens with one core rule, explained in everyday language with examples. Terms like rafa' (nominative state) or nashab (accusative state) are explained in meaning first, so you never memorize an empty term.

  2. Layered Examples

The rule is shown through examples that rise step by step, from a single word, to a two word structure, then a full sentence. You see the rule at work before you are asked to apply it yourself.

  3. I'rab and Tashrif Practice

You practice parsing a sentence to determine the position of each word in nahwu, and changing a word's form following wazan in shorof. The teacher corrects each step of the parsing on the spot.

  4. Applying to Text

The rule you have practiced is applied to sentences from an Arabic text suited to your level, so you feel directly how the rule helps you understand a reading.

  5. Munaqasyah for Advancement

Before moving up a level, you are tested with new sentences that have not been drilled, assessed by the accuracy of your i'rab, the correctness of your tashrif, and your grasp of the meaning. You advance after you pass.

Learning Map

Six Levels of Nahwu and Shorof

Six layered levels, each one becoming the foundation for the layer above it. You begin at the layer that matches your ability, then move up once you pass the munaqasyah at each stage.

Level

  1. 1 Knowing the Word Knowing the three kinds of word, namely isim (noun), fi'il (verb), and harf (particle), with the marks of each. Understanding the structure of jumlah ismiyah and jumlah fi'liyah as the two basic patterns of an Arabic sentence.
  2. 2 Foundations of I'rab Knowing the four states of i'rab, namely rafa', nashab, jar, and jazm, along with their original markers of dhammah, fathah, kasrah, and sukun on simple words.
  3. 3 Mubtada and Khabar Parsing the jumlah ismiyah, determining the mubtada (subject) and khabar (predicate) along with the rafa' marker on both, then knowing the words that affect them such as inna and kana.
  4. 4 Fi'il and Fa'il Parsing the jumlah fi'liyah, determining the fi'il (verb), fa'il (doer), and maf'ul bih (object), knowing fi'il madhi, mudhari', and amr along with the i'rab markers of the fi'il mudhari'.
  5. 5 Tashrif in Shorof Practicing the change of a word's form from a single root following wazan, knowing tsulatsi mujarrad and mazid, and forming the isim fa'il and isim maf'ul.
  6. 6 I'rab of a Whole Sentence Parsing a full sentence that holds various word positions, knowing the secondary i'rab markers on asma' khamsah (the five nouns) and plurals, then applying them to an Arabic text.

Each level only uses the rules already taught, so you parse sentences correctly from the very first practice at that stage.

Anatomy of the Material

The Parts of the Science You Study

Nahwu and shorof are made of several core topics that support one another. Here is the map of the lesson content you go through at Arabi.

  1. Classes of Words

Knowing isim as a noun, fi'il as a verb, and harf as a function word. Each kind is recognized by its mark so you can sort words before parsing a sentence.

  2. Rules of I'rab

Understanding rafa', nashab, jar, and jazm as the four end states of a word, along with their original markers, namely dhammah, fathah, kasrah, and sukun, then the secondary markers on certain forms.

  3. Tashrif and Wazan

Practicing the change of a word's form from a single root following wazan, from fi'il madhi to mudhari' and amr, then forming the isim fa'il, isim maf'ul, and mashdar.

  4. Sentence Structure

Distinguishing the jumlah ismiyah opened by an isim from the jumlah fi'liyah opened by a fi'il, determining the mubtada, khabar, fi'il, fa'il, and maf'ul in both.

  5. Amil and Its Effect

Knowing words that change the i'rab of the word after them, such as inna and its sisters that take the accusative, kana and its sisters, and the harf jar that takes the isim to the genitive.

  6. Applying to Text

Using the rules to read and understand Arabic sentences suited to your level, so the science of grammar shows its benefit in understanding real reading.

FAQ

Questions About Learning Nahwu and Shorof at Arabi

I do not know anything about nahwu yet, which level do I start from?
The first session begins with a friendly assessment, where the teacher listens to how well you know words and read Arabic script. From there the right level is set, usually level one, which opens with the introduction of isim, fi'il, and harf. You step on to the next rule once the foundation is solid.
What is the difference between nahwu and shorof, and why are they taught together?
Nahwu orders the position of a word within a sentence and decides the i'rab marker at its end, while shorof shapes how a single root word changes form following wazan. They are taught together at Arabi because they support each other. You need to recognize a word's form from shorof to determine its position in nahwu, so your understanding of a sentence becomes whole.
What is i'rab and why is it the heart of nahwu?
I'rab is the change in the end state of a word into rafa', nashab, jar, or jazm according to its position in a sentence. I'rab is the heart of nahwu because this final marker on a word decides whether it acts as the doer, the object, or a modifier. Understanding i'rab lets you read and grasp an Arabic sentence accurately.
Can learning nahwu and shorof help me read the classical kitab?
Yes, and this is one of the goals many students intend. Arabic books without harakat call for the ability of i'rab to be read correctly. Through Arabi's six levels, you are trained to parse a sentence until you can determine the final vowel of a word based on its position, so the ability to read unvocalized text grows in stages.
I am an adult and busy with work, can I still join?
Very much so, and you can learn with an easy heart. Many adult students at Arabi start from zero and grow through private one on one guidance. The teacher adjusts the pace to your busyness, and the session schedule is flexible to follow your best time, including evenings and weekends, so learning stays comfortable amid work.
How long does it usually take to parse a sentence on my own?
Every student is different, depending on the starting point and the regularity of practice. With six sequential levels and i'rab practice corrected privately every session, many students already begin to parse simple sentences within a few months. The teacher reports your progress regularly so you can track your achievement clearly.
Can nahwu and shorof lessons be taken online?
Yes. Arabi's online sessions use a video call with a digital whiteboard to parse sentences together. The teacher still corrects your i'rab and tashrif directly, and the hours adjust to your availability, including hours after work and on weekends, ideal for those with a full schedule.
